Esmolol's unique ester structure is rapidly hydrolysed by red blood cell esterases, giving it a 9-minute elimination half-life. Its selective β1 blockade reduces heart rate and myocardial contractility without the β2 bronchoconstriction risk of non-selective agents — critical in perioperative cardiopulmonary management.
